End of an era for town’s post office

Chesterfield’ Crown Post Office is to shutdown and move its operation from Market Place to a new home at WH Smith’s.

The Post Office was due to close at 5.30pm on Wednesday and the new branch opens at 9am today (Thursday) with promises of extended hours and access seven-days-a-week.

But Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins and the CWU union criticised Crown Post Office plans to shut such offices and transfer them into retail premises.

They have raised concerns forthe 19 staff, reduced services and space, job security and changes to workers’ terms and conditions.

Post Office Ltd insists service will be maintained with no compulsory redundancies.

Post Office Ltd claims the transfer to WH Smith’s on The Pavements will provide extended hours and access seven-days-a-week.

It argues Chesterfield is one of about 70 Crown Post Offices earmarked for franchise to ensure branches are sustainable and not reliable on Government funding. Post Office Ltd has moved Baslow Post Office to a Spar and Matlock’s Crown has been earmarked for a move.
