Alfreton revellers commemorate VE Day in style


The activities in the grounds of Alfreton House Gardens on Sunday were part of nationwide celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of VE Day on Friday, May 8.
Alfreton Town Council which hosted the event invited representatives from various related organisations who put on marvellous stalls and displays of memorabilia.

Hide AdThere was also a drill-session demonstration from the 1401 Alfreton and Ripley ATC Cadets, Alfreton Cubs & Beavers took part in a camp fire style sing-song and musicians Bruce Swanwick, Adam Plew and Richard Hunter, entertained visitors with World War Two songs.


Other groups included Alfreton WI, Alfreton and District Heritage Trust, Alfreton Beavers and many others.
A beacon was also lit at 9.32pm, on Friday, at the Mercian Regimental War Memorial at nearby Crich, with other beacons across the country to commemorate the end of the Second World War in Europe.
The beacon lighting was organised by Derbyshire County Council and Crich Parish Council.
