Derby and South Derbyshire Coroner’s Court heard how her mum came across her teenage daughter’s body at their home in Shipley on Tuesday.

She was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham where she was pronounced dead.

Detective Sergeant Kerry Pope told the inquest: “The last sighting of Emily was by her mother Jennifer at 6.45am on Tuesday when Jennifer left for work.

“She returned home from work at 6.10pm and found Emily’s body.

“Emily was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre where she was pronounced dead at 7.35pm.”

DS Pope said Emily, of Hassock Lane, was identified at 10.45pm the same night by her parents Jennifer and David.

Mrs and Mrs Turnbull said their daughter was “a very popular girl who was looked up to by many” where she studied at Highfields School, In Matlock.

They said they wanted to thank the school for all of the help and support they had received since their daughter died.

A statement on the school’s website reads: “You may well be aware by now of the tragic news that our Year 12 student, Emily Turnbull, died earlier this week.

“Emily was a lovely girl and valued member of our school community.

“Her death comes as a shock to us all.

“We have spoken to all students in school about Emily’s death and stressed that we will support each other at this difficult time.

“The school is being supported over the coming days and weeks by our psychology support services, and come the summer break we will ensure everyone knows what support is available whilst school is closed.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with Emily’s family and her many friends.”
