Traffic halts on M1 as truck ‘severely’ damaged by fire

M1 traffic was stopped as firefighters were called to a fire which “severely” damaged a pick-up truck.

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service were called to the section of motorway, between junction 27 and 28, at 11.43am, Saturday, June 6, to extinguish the fire.

A spokesman from the rescue service said: “Crews from Alfreton and Ashfield attended a car fire on the M1 near Junction 28. This was a pick-up truck and was severely damaged by fire.

“Two hose reels and two breathing apparatus were used to extinguish the fire.”

Highways England announced that traffic had stopped on the M1 while firefighters dealt with blaze and they later announced they had opened a lane to let traffic through.

A Highways spokesman said: “The M1 northbound between J27 and J28 was held temporarily whilst firefighters deal with a vehicle fire.

“The fire is under control and traffic is being allowed to pass.”
