Lea Road, near Cromford, has been closed since January 15, 2020, after the edge of the road started to fall away down the steep banking below.

The road kept collapsing and in March a ground investigation was carried out where a number of boreholes were drilled into the ground.

This showed that the landslip had taken place because the ground was saturated, following a very wet few months in which many parts of the country were flooded.

At the time the council said it expected the road to remain closed for ‘many months’ and today (November 17) it has confirmed the closure will last for at least a year.

A spokesperson said: “We asked a specialist contractor to provide us with a solution and expected the work to start on site by the end of October.

“Unfortunately this hasn’t happened, and we apologise to those affected by this road closure. We need to seek permissions from the Environment Agency and BT to start the work, and now expect work to start in January.

"The work should take 16 weeks, so we’d expect the road to re-open in the spring.”
