Thieves stole Cromford Christmas lights and vandalised war memorial

The Christmas lights were switched on in Cromford on Friday, however villagers were dismayed when they woke up on Wednesday morning to find vandals had ransacked their Christmas display.

“It shows a complete and utter lack of Christmas spirit,” Councillor Russ Boyack, chairman of Cromford Parish Council, said.

Half the village’s LED lights had been stolen, and the wires had been cut to the remaining lights, meaning they were no longer working.

“They also took all the wreaths off the War Memorial and threw them about,” Cllr Boyack added.

He said vandalising the War Memorial showed a lack of respect.

Derbyshire County Council has agreed to held the council fix the remaining Christmas lights so they can be switched on again.

Cllr Boyack added: “Lots of people gave their time free of charge to make the village more attractive over Christmas.”

He said a local electrician had helped to put up the lights for free and the tree had been donated.
