The week-old youngsters’ mother, Wilma, sadly died and faced an uncertain future before the 14 year-old stepped in.

Lewis, who works weekends at Barlow Trout and Coarse Fishery , managed to persuade its owners to house the young porkers while he hand-rears them.

Since then the Brookfield Community School student has been sleeping at the farm and hand-feeding the Berkshire piglets every half-an-hour day and night during his helf-term break.

Mum Kerry, 40, said Lewis was exhuasted after a sleepless week and not keen on the nippers going for bacon in the years to come.

“They are amazing,” said Kerry.

“As soon as they hear his voice they know he is coming to feed them - they even know his footsteps.

“It’s quite funny because as soon as they hear him they come sqealing and running to him for a feed. He is so protective of them - it’s very sweet.”

Kerry, said she and her husband were incredibly proud of their son’s dedication and would continue to care for the piggies when he is back in the school term.
