Strong winds put out windows, upturn trees and damage rooftops across Derbyshire

Casa Hotel, in Chesterfield, has reported having one of its windows blown in by the strong winds that have swept through the town over the past few days.

Belper firefighters joined the aerial ladder platform from Chesterfield and police at Bridge Street, Belper, today when a dangerous structure was reported at 11.46am.

Upon arrival they found a falling chimney pot and unstable chimney stack on top of a three-storey shop measuring five metres by ten metres, as well as a number of broken roof tiles which needed to be removed.

Initially only part of the main A6 road was cordoned off while emergency services tended to the scene, however later the entire street was closed to public and traffic as the aerial ladder platform removed the dangerous items, including numerous chimney pots and masonry.

The road was later reopened.

At 12.05pm firefighters were called to a three–storey commercial building measuring ten metres by ten metres which had unsecured scaffolding bars in New Street, Alfreton.

The crews made the scene safe and left at 12.30pm.

In Ilkeston, firefighters attended another dangerous structure in South Street, at 10.11am.

At 10.25am an aerial ladder platform from Derby was called to tend to two roof crawlers in an unsafe position on another three-storey building.

The roof crawlers were removed and the crews left at 11.28am.
