Somme re-enacted by Eckington pupils

Year ten students from Eckington School took part in a re-enactment of the Battle of the Somme last month. The re-enactment took place in the sports hall and involved the whole year group, and two very special guest speakers.

The first guest speaker was Ray Risk. Ray approached the school following a concern that the important learning surrounding the Battle of the Somme was being lost through changes in curriculum.

Ray is a member of the Royal British Legion Riders Branch, the county representative for Derbyshire and the appointed Poppy Appeal organizer for Eckington. The school were keen to ensure students had the experience that Ray and his colleagues had to offer. The battle re-enactment gave students an insight into this important historical event.

Following the re-enactment, the Mayor of Chesterfield, Councillor Steve Brunt, delivered a well-informed presentation to the students.

The whole event gave a very powerful message to the students who came away from the event with a deep understanding about the impact this battle had on so many.
