Snow bringschaos

Schools throughout the area were forced to close, roads ground to a halt and many vulnerable residents struggled to get the care they required.

But despite the challenging circumstances, members of the public, emergency services and local authorities have worked tirelessly in a bid to keep the Dales running smoothly.

Derbyshire County Council staff and Peak 4x4 Response volunteers have driven vital care workers to patients in need and gritting crews have worked around the clock to keep the roads clear.

Countryside rangers rescued a couple and their three-month-old baby from a road near Ladybower Reservoir after they attempted to walk from their stranded car in blizzard conditions.

Vital supplies were delivered to a holiday cottage on Tideswell Moor after 10ft snow drifts left three families, with a number of young children, stranded without food.

Emergency services also came to the rescue of a woman in her 80s who had become trapped in her home in the Peak District.

Snow drifts were as high as the house of the lady, who lived alone, and had covered the flue of its heating system – meaning there was no heat. County council staff and mountain rescue teams dug the house out, delivered food and re-started the heating system.
