Some 74.3 per cent of Derbyshire folk were either very or completely happy with life in 2013/14 – a score higher than Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire.

The county’s happiness figures have increased from 72 per cent the year before, according to the Office for National Statistics data.

Researchers said the reason for the rise “may be the more positive economic outlook”.

On the Derbyshire Times’ Facebook page, Charlotte Corker said: “I’m happy to live here because it’s beautiful and quiet.”

According to the research, 72.2 per cent of people in Nottinghamshire said they were either very or completely happy with life while the figure was 70.6 per cent for South Yorkshire.

The research said Northern Ireland was the happiest place in the United Kingdom.

The least happy areas were Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, Dartford in Kent, Torridge in Devon, Maldon in Essex and South Ribble in Lancashire.
