A masterplan has identified Chesterfield as an 'important driver of economic growth' in Sheffield City Region.

The Integrated Infrastructure Plan outlines and prioritises a number of important projects in the area.

These include the Chesterfield Waterside and Peak Resort developments as well as plans to improve the A61 corridor and tackle the flood-risk at the town’s railway station.

Councillor John Burrows, Chesterfield Borough Council’s leader and cabinet member for regeneration, said: "Chesterfield has been a member of Sheffield City Region since the Local Enterprise Partnership was formed in 2010. We are included in this report along with Bassetlaw, Bolsover, Derbyshire Dales and North East Derbyshire as well as councils in the South Yorkshire area.

"The report looks at long-term infrastructure projects across the whole region and we are pleased that it will be used to prioritise investment in Chesterfield in the coming years.

"It demonstrates once again our position as an equal partner in Sheffield City Region and the opportunities available to Chesterfield people as a consequence of this.

"We will be working closely with partners, including Derbyshire County Council, to bring forward these improvements which will improve the borough's infrastructure for residents, visitors and local businesses and encourage economic growth."

Philip Cooper, of Sheffield City Region, added: "Chesterfield itself, its businesses and transport routes are recognised as an important driver of economic growth across the region.

"The A61 corridor is a major growth area for the Sheffield City Region and features as a key part of the plan. Similarly it is sensible to strategically look at how we safeguard key Sheffield City Region infrastructure, such as Chesterfield railway station, which is at risk of flooding."

Currently, Chesterfield is a non-constituent member of Sheffield City Region.

The borough council has voted for Chesterfield to become a full member but this is dependent on a decision made by the Secretary of State.

The county council is opposed to the move.
