Severn Trent’s water champions celebrate Volunteers’ Week

Water firm Severn Trent will be helping to mark Volunteers’ Week, which begins today (June 1).

It is an annual celebration of all those fantastic people who work in the local community for free and one year on from the launch of the Water Champions scheme, Severn Trent Water celebrates the work of its volunteers.

Thanks to the Water Champions, across the Midlands almost 5,000 pupils and adults at 30 schools and community centres are now benefiting from water efficient gardens. More than 450 volunteers from Severn Trent Water and its contract partners – including Laing O’Rourke, Amey, NMCNomenca and MWH – have collectively worked almost more than 4,500 hours to create a fun and stimulating outdoor environment, to help people learn about the water cycle and water efficiency.

To bring the gardens to life, volunteers speak to local businesses to source materials. They work with schools and community organisations to understand what they need and how they can make a difference. Following their great teamwork, 30 gardens are now established and many more are planned for the future.

Severn Trent Water’s communications assistant and Water Champion, Sheena Clement, explains what it’s like to be a volunteer: “It was brilliant being a Water Champion volunteer; especially seeing the kids’ faces light up as they enjoyed their new outdoor classroom for the first time. We also helped them to learn how to use water wisely while they played. It’s great to know what we’ve done will make a lasting difference for generations to come.”

Severn Trent Water’s community and volunteering manager, Leanne Town, adds: “This week we’d like to say a big thank you to all our Water Champions volunteers and local suppliers who’ve supported us along the way. Through their hard work and commitment, so many schools and community centres across the Midlands are benefitting from outdoor learning areas and new gardens.

“We’re keen to keep the Water Champions scheme going for many years to come, it is great to give something back to local communities in our region. We’re looking for more schools to register their interest in our programme – it’s simple, to find out more visit stwater.co.uk/waterchampions.”
