A spokeswoman for Derbyshire police said the crash involved a Peugeot 306 and a Toyota Yaris. It is thought the driver of the Peugeot was taken ill at the wheel. He and five other people were taken to Northern General Hospital.

Police said there were three people in the Peugeot and four in the Yaris – including three elderly people.

A spokeswoman for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters freed all seven people by 4.50pm. The road was reopened several hours later.
