Scout group sale to raise £65k for HQ

Scouts in Kilburn are hoping to raise a whopping £65,000 to revamp their crumblng headquarters – and they need the public to back them.

The existing HQ on Highfield Road, Kilburn, is crumbling and outdated and in dire need of improvement.

The property, which is used by Scouts, Cubs and beavers from the 1st Horsley and Kilburn group, does not have inside toilets or a standard working kitchen.

Plans would see the refurbishment of the kitchen, and an extension for inside toilets and a storage area for equipment.

Group Scout leader Richard Ward said the renovations are much needed to get the property up to scratch.

He said: “Plans to give the building a serious face lift are long overdue.

“The children deserve somewhere decent with good facilities, but it is a big job, which means big money unfortunately.

The appeal was first launched last July, when the Scout group hoped to raise £70,000.

The group have since managed to raise nearly £5,000 through fund raising events.

The group is now planning a string of charity events including its annual plant sale.

The sale will take place at the Denby Institute on Derby Road, on May 16 and 17. It will run from 8.30am to 4.30pm.

A colourful array of nursery grown plants are available via a pre-ordering service, where the group send out fliers with a price list.

People can email with an order which the group will put together.

Richard said the group were ready to get stuck into drumming up the cash.

He said: “The whole group are excited, and hopefully the refurb will see us welcoming more young people to the Scouts, Beavers and Cubs.”
