Sadness as bike club closes after 32 years

Members of Peak Dale Youth Motorcycle Club met for the final time on Sunday.

The popular volunteer-run group, which operated from Wainwrights Quarry in Peak Dale, which has been forced to shut as the landowners intend to set up a new business at the site.

Jane Sparkes, the club’s secretary for 18 years, said: “It was a really sad, emotional day on Sunday. We had a fantastic turnout, with 76 riders along with family members, and it was also great to see so many past members.

“We are very sad about the landowner’s decision. We can understand his position, but after 30 years it is a big blow.”

Peak Dale Motorcycle Club was founded in 1981 by local resident Reg Hallam to give children who could not afford a bike, or with nowhere to ride their own bikes legally, a place to ride in a safe and supervised environment.

Speaking in February when the closure was announced, Mr Hallam said: “Thousands of youngsters have been involved in this wonderful group and learned how to become better and safer motorcyclists. I’ve treasured this group for 32 years and I’m incredibly grateful to all the dedicated and wonderful volunteers who’ve helped.”

Chairman Chris Sparkes added: “Our thanks and appreciation go to Reg, who’s amazing idea, determination and planning has provided an extremely successful club available for every family with interests on riding safely.”
