The nine-strong mechanical engineering team included Ripley students Cameron Trotter, third-left rear, and Claire McKee, third left front. They entered their environmentally-friendly vehicle into the 30th version of the Shell Eco-marathon in the UrbanConcept category and they competed with 3,000 students from across Europe.

French and Danish teams took the honours at the competition. However, a spokesman said the university was very proud of its team not least because it included two women in a field and industry which has proven to be mainly populated by men despite high salaries and career paths for women.
