Twenty one residents from Devon Park View, Brimington, signed the petition objecting to the application to build a two-bedroomed property at the rear of 9 Dorset Drive, which would be accessed from their street.

Discussing the plans, submitted by Alison Booth, in a meeting of Chesterfield Borough Council’s Planning Committee on Monday, June 27, Group Leader for Development Management Paul Staniforth explained the designs were very similar to an existing bungalow built at the rear of the neighbouring property number 11, while on the other side at number 7 residents had built a double garage.

He said: “Many of the residents of Devon Park View have objected with individual letters and a 21 signature petition.”

Mr Staniforth added that the main concern raised related to the impact on highway safety, especially taking into account its proximity to Henry Bradley Infant School.

He said the highways authority raised no objection, but recommended the completion of a construction management plan to ‘help mitigate the impact of the construction process’.

Resident Theresa Long commented: “It’s a very small road and vehicles during the construction of this property are going to have to park somewhere.

“We’ve obviously got to gain access to and from our houses on that street and I don’t know how we’re going to do that with all the vehicles there.”

Mr Staniforth said the council would have to make the builder aware of the ‘limitations’ of the site and ensure construction materials were not kept on the road.

Councillor Ray Catt said: “In theory there’s no planning reason why you can refuse this application, most of the problems and concerns of the local residents really revolve around a short period of time when they’re building this bungalow.”

The application was approved.
