Petition launched for cycle lane to the Peak District

The stretch between Bents Green and the Norfolk Arms on the fast Ringinglow Road is heavily used by both vehicles and cyclists.

To make it safer, Hannah Greenslade launched a petition to urge the council to undertake an assessment to see if banks on both sides of the road could be turned into cycle lanes.

In her petition statement she said, if built, it would help cyclists feel safer, encourage more people to cycle out to the Peak District and therefore improve health and wellbeing and reduce risky driving such as overtaking at speed.

At the time of writing, more than 70 people have signed the petition.

Marilyn Small, who signed the petition, commented: “Ringinglow Road is frustrating for car drivers and dangerous for cyclists.”

Bob Bryan, another signee, said: “It’s a very popular cycle route but extremely hazardous. A segregated cycle lane would be heavily used by families and others linking with the (mountain bike) track in Lady Cannings plantation.”

Data released by a Freedom of Information request to South Yorkshire Police in 2019 showed Ringinglow Road was one of the most dangerous stretches in the city for cyclists, with more casualities reported there the year before than most other roads.
