People are encouraged to take part in a public consultation being launched by Chesterfield Borough Council, to make sure future commemorations reflect what is important to local residents and that they are inclusive of our diverse communities.

Coun Tricia Gilby, council leader, said: “Remembering our history is vital because it shows where we’ve come from and can inform our future.

“I encourage anyone to take part in our consultation – by sharing your views you will be helping to shape how we collectively remember our community’s history.”

The launch of the online consultation follows a review of commemorations in the borough that considered the origins of statues, plaques and street names.

As well as the recommendation to consult with local people on how decisions about commemorations are made in the future, the review also set out plans to improve the information made available to the public about the process of changing a street name, put more information about it online and work more closely with the Civic Society and Derbyshire County Council, to ensure the blue plaque scheme adds more historical context and can be used as a educational resource.
