The Shipley, Smalley and Horsley Safer Neighbourhood Team carried out anti-social behaviour patrols in the park following concerns of groups gathering in the area.

During the patrols on Friday, July 3, around 20 underage drinkers had their alcohol seized by officers, with alcohol warnings being issued to their parents and guardians.

Following the incident, police are now asking parents to make sure they know what their children are doing when they are out and reminding all adults that it is an offence to buy or supply alcohol to under 18s.

The penalty for anyone caught buying alcohol for an under 18 is an on the spot fixed penalty notice of £90, which could rise to £1000 if the case goes through to court.

PCSO Courtney Chetwyn from the local policing team said: “Underage drinking is something that we will continue to target to help reduce anti-social and nuisance behaviour in our community.

“By confiscating the alcohol we have been able to protect the teens from getting into harmful and potentially dangerous situations, along with reducing any disturbance on people living nearby.

“The team and I would also like to remind all adults that if you provide or buy alcohol for a youngster then you are breaking the law. You risk a fine and even prosecution, but more importantly you are putting their safety at risk.”

Officers will continue to carry out regular patrols in hotspot areas to help deter anti-social behaviour and underage drinking in the community.
