A cat has apparently been poisoned to death in a Derbyshire town - sparking a police investigation.

A member of the public called police when they discovered the dead animal in Crossley Street, Ripley, on Friday, February 10.

A Derbyshire police spokesman said a vet believes the cat may have been poisoned by anti-freeze.

He added: "We're appealing for anybody with information or anybody who witnessed anything suspicious on that day to contact us.

"Officers have been handing out leaflets in the area with an appeal for information and advice for cat owners.

"No arrests have been made.

"Anybody who can help should contact police on 101, quoting reference number 256/10."
