A young Chesterfield dad ‘who loved spending time with his children’ took his own life after a battle with mental health problems.

Robert Plant, 32, who enjoyed riding motorbikes and was ‘born and raised’ in the town, was found dead by police on August 7 last year.

An inquest was told Mr Plant had died from asphyxia and hanging at his home address on Woodstock Court, Flamsteed Crescent, Chesterfield.

The hearing at Chesterfield Town Hall heard Mr Plant enjoyed family barbecues where he was ‘a lot of fun’, extreme sports and outdoor activities like potholing and camping.

Mr Plant was born in Chesterfield and while at school had suffered from ADHD which was only later diagnosed.

After some difficult times in his life he had got a job at a quarry and enjoyed spending time with his young children.

After losing his job and not being able to see the children as much as he liked, Mr Plant’s mental health began to suffer.

He had been prescribed medication for depression and had appointments with mental health teams.

Mr Plant had been signed off sick from his job and this was when his employment was terminated.

Pc Thomas Bartrup said police had been alerted after a friend of Mr Plant had been unable to contact him and could hear Mr Plant’s phone ringing inside his flat.

After forcing entry to the property at 1am on August 7 2019, officers found Mr Plant and he was pronounced dead later that day.

Pc Bartrup said there were no suspicious circumstances.

Recording a verdict of suicide, assistant coroner for Derbyshire Emma Serrano passed her condolences to Mr Plant’s family.

“I am satisfied he intended to do it because of his past unhappiness and treatment for depression. Also, he had lost his job and was not seeing his children as much as he liked and there were some changes in his medication.”
