Last year, Chesterfield Borough Council passed plans to demolish the prominent property, which has been vacant for more than five years.

In March, councillors approved an outline planning application to build offices and a 40-space car park at the Malkin Street site.

The proposals were submitted by Prestige Hotels (Midlands) Ltd, which owns the building, and the borough council.

The Derbyshire Times asked Prestige Hotels (Midlands) Ltd when the property would be knocked down but had not received a response at the time of publication.

A council spokesperson said: “We are unable to confirm when the building is likely to be demolished as the applicant for demolition was a private company.

"We are working with the owners of the hotel and anticipate having an update on this by the end of September 2020.”

Speaking before the outline planning application was approved, council leader Tricia Gilby told the Derbyshire Times: “We have made the application as part of an ongoing process to try and secure the long-term economic future of the site, with the view of establishing an office development as a suitable use. We are working closely with the current hotel owners, Prestige Hotels (Midlands) Limited, throughout this process.

"This is an outline application to test the principle of building offices on the site after the hotel is demolished. A final design will require a further application which will be submitted to the planning committee following more detailed design work.

“An outline application like this can be used to support grant funding applications as these often require a planning permission as evidence of development potential.

“We will continue to involve the public in our future plans for redevelopment in that area.”

Chesterfield Hotel, formerly the Station Hotel, opened in 1877 and closed in 2015, making it one of the town’s longest-running businesses.

It had been due to go under the hammer in an online auction in 2018, but was withdrawn before the sale.
