All of Britain’s unions are backing the silence, which will remember the many front line workers who have died in the coronavirus pandemic.

James Eaden, president of Chesterfield and District Trades Union Council, said: “The number of workers who have died as a result of being exposed to Covid-19 is shocking.

“Front line staff in health, social care, retail, public transport and many other sectors are keeping society going, but are often being sent out to work without adequate personal protective equipment.

“Many have paid the ultimate price.

“We will be honouring them but also demanding that all workers are given proper protection and only work in safe conditions.

“We mourn the dead – and we fight for the living,” he added.

Joan Pons Laplana is an NHS intensive care unit nurse who lives in Chesterfield.

He said: “I became a nurse because I wanted to save lives, not forfeit mine.

“Over the last few weeks many of my colleagues have died because of the coronavirus.

“At 11am on April 28 I want you to join us on a minute’s silence to remember them – because no one should go to work to die.”
