Watch young Chesterfield singers perform 'We'll Meet Again' to raise spirits during lockdown

Lucy Johnson, Daisy Hinde and Melany Smith performed the Dame Vera Lynn classic as part of their work with the Chesterfield Community Volunteers group, which was set up to support elderly and vulnerable people during the crisis.

They also performed at a special virtual concert which was streamed into several care homes in the Chesterfield area on Good Friday.

NHS personal assistant Tom Oxley, who founded the Chesterfield Community Volunteers, said: “It went down a treat. We streamed it to several care homes in and around Chesterfield and to some people’s actual homes as well. The feedback was amazing. They all loved it.

“A few days back I asked the girls to do a compilation video of them all singing We’ll Meet Again,” Tom added.

The idea for the concert first came about when residents at The Green Care Home in Dronfield were disappointed after a host of entertainment booked for them by staff had to be cancelled because of the spiralling coronavirus crisis.

Gemma Gill, activities coordinator at The Green, said it was a ‘really nice gesture’ which had given residents ‘something to look forward to’.

Tom’s Community Volunteers Group has already raised more than its initial target of £500 and more than 600 Chesterfield people have volunteered to do their bit.

They have been delivering hampers of food and toiletries to residents in need throughout the crisis.

Music is keeping many upbeat as the UK's lockdown continues - and Dame Vera's wartime classic is one of the songs helping people through.

After the Queen's reference to the song in her address to the nation last week, sales have increased by a massive 580 per cent so far week-on-week, according to the Official Charts Company.
