A neighbourhood project that has helped local people during the pandemic, a scheme that supports young people to read, and a group that helps older people to take up cycling are among the initiatives to receive money from Chesterfield Borough Council’s ‘Community Infrastructure Levy’.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “This has been an incredibly difficult year and our community organisations have really stepped up and supported Chesterfield.

"I want to thank everyone for all they have done to help our residents this year.

“We’re doing all we can to support our grassroots projects which are so vital to local people. The range of projects that have been awarded grants demonstrates how this scheme works for all Chesterfield residents.”

Applications for the next round of funding are now being invited – and groups are being urged to get in touch by the end of the year.

Councillor Gilby added: “For many this is a vital source of funding and I want to encourage any community groups to get in touch by the next deadline, which is December 31.”

The funding is allocated to projects that support the council’s priorities and have a significant benefit to local communities.

Inclusive Pedals is a social enterprise that works to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to experience cycling, and group leaders have received funding to support its new ‘Cycling Without Age’ project – set to launch in 2021.

Alastair Meikle, coordinator of Inclusive Pedals, said: “The grant means we will launch the inter-generational project in spring 2021 with older generation and less able people being taken out for a cycle ride by younger volunteers on the electrically-assisted trishaw.”

The Friends of New Whittington Schools have also received funding, to help expand school libraries and make them more accessible for pupils at home.
