The explorer – who calls himself Xplore Urbex – gained access to the prominent property, which has been vacant for nearly six years.

He said: “Abandoned since 2015, this huge hotel now sits empty, with a big swimming pool, steam room and sauna, a gym and a very impressive ballroom with big crystal chandeliers.

“A lot of the bedrooms have damage but there are still a few in good condition.

“There are multiple bar areas and a lovely big old piano.

“There were a few signs of mould and damp in the lower areas of the building – possibly due to the lack of air flow – and slight bits of vandalism in other areas but nothing too bad.

“There were also signs of some rooms being used at some point by possible rough sleepers, and signs of drug use.”

Xplore Urbex said it was a ‘shame for a building with so many rooms to be sat empty’.

Last year, Chesterfield Borough Council passed plans to demolish the former hotel building.

In March, councillors approved an outline planning application to build offices and a 40-space car park at the Malkin Street site.

The proposals were submitted by Prestige Hotels (Midlands) Ltd, which has owned the property since 2017, and the council.

Chesterfield Hotel, formerly the Station Hotel, opened in 1877 and closed in 2015.
