“My understanding from Tesco’s current television advertisement is that there should be hand sanitiser available on entering the store and a means for customers to disinfect their trolley.

“Nether of these were available – nor was there any sign of any staff members cleaning trolleys.

“To add insult to injury I was only allowed to buy one bottle of milk.

“These rationing measures are forcing people to make more visits to the store than they normally would, which is again increasing the risk of passing on Covid-19.”

Mr Cooper – who has complained to Tesco – added: “Having returned from the shambolic store I felt both unclean and unsafe.”

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We’re sorry this customer was disappointed during their visit to their local store.

“We’ve spoken to the store manager who has confirmed that all trolleys are being disinfected and hand sanitiser is available in the store.

“She will be working to ensure that these measures continue so we can protect customers and colleagues.

“We’re asking customers to help by following some simple requests when they shop with us, including following the Government guidelines of maintaining a social distance of 2m from fellow customers.”
