Samuel Slater, who was born in Belper in 1768, went on to become the Father of the USA’s Industrial Revolution. Slater was trained by Jedediah Strutt to use machines in the practice of cotton spinning and took his knowledge with him over to the United States. Some Belper people called him “Slater the Traitor” but in America he was welcomed with open arms.
