An outline planning application – which seeks to build offices and a car park with around 40 spaces at the Malkin Street site – was given the green light at a Chesterfield Borough Council meeting on Monday.

Last year, councillors approved plans to demolish the former hotel building, which has been vacant for five years now and become a target for crime.

It is not yet known when the demolition work will take place.

The outline planning application was submitted by Prestige Hotels (Midlands) Ltd, which owns the prominent property, and the borough council.

Speaking before planning consent was granted, council leader Tricia Gilby told the Derbyshire Times: “We have made the application as part of an ongoing process to try and secure the long-term economic future of the site, with the view of establishing an office development as a suitable use. We are working closely with the current hotel owners, Prestige Hotels (Midlands) Limited, throughout this process.

“This is an outline application to test the principle of building offices on the site after the hotel is demolished. A final design will require a further application which will be submitted to the planning committee following more detailed design work.

“An outline application like this can be used to support grant funding applications as these often require a planning permission as evidence of development potential.

“We will continue to involve the public in our future plans for redevelopment in that area.”
