Pictures: Celebrations as Derbyshire charity shop reopens after devastating arson attack - with charity shop influencer attending event

A charity shop forced to close after a break in and arson attack has reopened – following months of rebuilding and an outpouring of support from the community.

The Children’s Society shop on Oxford Street, Ripley, was badly damaged in a break-in and fire on 2 December 2025, which gutted the shop’s interior and forced it to close.

Since then, the charity has continued trading from a pop-up shop inside the Ripley Co-op, where space was generously provided free of charge. The pop-up will continue to run alongside the newly reopened store.

Support from the Co-op was one of many gestures from the community, with businesses and residents donating goods, services and time to help the shop get back on its feet.

Antony Richards, Retail Regional Manager for Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire at The Children’s Society, said: “We’ve been counting down to this moment since the devastating fire in December. What could have been the end of our shop in Ripley has instead shown the very best of this community.

“The support we’ve received has been incredible - from customers who stayed with us at the pop-up shop, to local partners who stepped in when we needed it most. Thanks to them, we’re not just reopening, we’re coming back stronger.”

The reopening on April 15 was marked with a special event attended by the Mayor of Ripley, Councillor Colin Bailey, alongside lifestyle and charity shop influencer Lola Amuah.

Lola raised £1,137 through an online sale after hearing about the fire and will present a cheque on the day.

Councillor Bailey said: “On behalf of Ripley Town Council, I'm delighted to see the reopening of the Children's Society shop on Oxford Street. It's great to see it fully restored following the fire.

"I'm confident that local residents will use it and by doing so support the vital work of the society in helping children living in poverty, at risk of abuse and exploitation, or struggling with their mental health."

Lola Amuah said: “The Children’s Society does so much great work for children and young people, so it’s really great to see their shop back from the ashes and open again!

“Charity shops offer fantastic bargains with some great stuff at unbelievably low prices, which is really crucial for a lot of people in this current climate, and I can’t wait to have a look around and find some deals for myself!”

At a private event, certificates of thanks signed by Mark Russell, CEO of The Children’s Society, were presented to Ripley Co-op store manager Rachel Payne – in recognition of her thoughtful and generous offer and the work of the wider Co-op staff – and Lola Amuah for her fundraising contribution.
