'Peaceful retreat in nature' glamping site with shepherd's huts in north Derbyshire wins planning consent

A proposal for a glamping site accommodating six shepherd’s huts on the outskirts of a north Derbyshire village has been given the green light.

Michelle Butterworth has been granted planning permission to site the huts for overnight guest use on land to the east of Wood Cottage, Harper Hill, Wingerworth. The application includes external decking areas, permeable grass-grid track and footpaths, parking and turning areas, storage sheds, package treatment plant and soakaway and minor landscaping including the introduction of a wildlife pond.

Acting on an officer’s recommendation, North East Derbyshire District Council approved the application for a site that borders the Green Belt. A report to the authority stated: “Officers are of the view that the proposed development represents an acceptable form of development within a countryside setting, and, subject to the scheme of landscaping which forms part of the development proposals, would satisfactorily preserve the character and appearance of the prevailing rural landscape.”

The application was submitted to the council in 2025 and accompanied by reports, prepared by Glampitect on behalf of Eutierra Retreats, which indicated that a 70% occupancy of the huts would generate an estimated £4.02million for the area’s economy in the first 10 years.

Relaxation and rejuvenation, health and wellbeing would be the focus of the child-free glamping site which which would be marketed as a peaceful retreat in nature. Guests would be offered the opportunity to connect with providers of massage, forest bathing, yoga, art classes and artisan crafts.

Couples on overnight stays or short breaks would be accommodated in the energy efficient two-person huts which would have corrugated metal roofs and external timber cladding.
