Plans have been pitched to change the use of Brampton Manor from a leisure complex, bar and restaurant into six new flats for over-55s.

HP General Partner Ltd has applied for planning permission from Chesterfield Borough Council to make the changes, which will also need listed building consent.

Craig Lynch, managing director of Brampton Manor, confirmed that a retirement village was the likely long-term future for the site in April last year.

At the time, he urged people ‘to come down and enjoy’ the site ‘as it moves towards its next regeneration’.

It was confirmed in November that the leisure centre, known as Princes Sports Club, would be closing ‘imminently’ for ‘complex reasons’.

The Manor House remains open and the bar and restaurant are still in operation along with Brampton Manor Salon.

Brampton Manor, which is accessed from Old Road, Brampton, is Grade II-listed and there are two other other buildings, a clubhouse and Brampton Barn, on the site.

Documents submitted with the planning application say: “Very few changes to the exterior of the buildings are required although an uncomplimentary rear kitchen extension, which was a relatively late addition to the listed Brampton Manor, will be removed.”

The plans add: “It will be seen that there are three separate elements to the proposals, firstly the conversion and change of use of Brampton Manor to five apartments with two of them, each providing two bedrooms, located on the ground floor.

“A further three apartments are provided on the first floor; two have two bedrooms with an additional unit having one bedroom.

“Immediately to the rear of The Manor, the sixth new unit (one bedroom) is two storeys in its layout.”

The applicant describes the plan as ‘a highly beneficial change of use of valued listed buildings’ which ‘accords with the main relevant policies set out in the Chesterfield Local Plan’.
