The car park, which will have space for 68 vehicles, is to be located at the junction of Mill Street, Station Road and Corporation Street on the site of the former Derbyshire Times office.

Chesterfield Borough Council’s planning chiefs have given applicants Ban Park Ltd, of Sheffield, permission to develop the car park in a bid to ‘bring active use to a currently derelict site in the town centre’.

Planning documents state: “The site is highly visible on a ‘gateway’ into the town centre for pedestrians walking from Chesterfield Station. The site was formerly occupied by the Derbyshire Times offices.

“The building was demolished and the site is currently vacant, temporary fencing is present enclosing the site boundary.”

Chesterfield Civic Society said it was ‘very happy’ to support the application, which will ‘help to improve the appearance of the approach to the town centre from the station for a few years until the site is redeveloped’.

Bank Parking Limited says a percentage of all parking fees will go to Ashgate Hospicecare in the town.

The business says it is ‘founded on commitment to giving to charity and a sum of over £128,000 has been raised to date’.

The car park will be a temporary measure as the site forms part of the Chesterfield station area masterplan, which aims to transform the gateway into the town centre.
