Julie Birch’s three-year-old son Stan put a piece of Lego up his nose on Sunday morning – and although she didn’t want to take him to hospital for obvious reasons, she had no choice.

Julie, 43, of Bolsover, said: “The staff at the Royal were absolutely amazing and we can’t thank them enough.

Julia said medics at the hospital taught her how to carry out the Mother’s Kiss technique, which is designed to remove foreign objects from a child’s nose.

Big-hearted staff at the Royal also gave a teddy bear to Stan, who turns four on May 11.

He, meanwhile, gave his NHS heroes some chocolate.
