Cuba Bailey, who is currently on furlough from Nonnas on Chatsworth Road, wanted to do something to help his community during the pandemic.

The 21-year-old is making meals for collection from Nonna’s between around 11.30am and 2pm until Friday and is asking for nothing in return.

He hopes to do the same thing in future weeks after an online fundraising page he set up to buy ingredients exceeded its £350 target.

Cuba said: "Hopefully what I’m doing will assist people at this difficult time.

“I’ve seen how hard many of my loved ones have been working throughout lockdown – and I wanted to put my skills to good use and do something nice to help others.

“Whether it’s due to financial strain, emotional exhaustion or anything affecting your accessibility to food, I want to provide you with a nice meal so you can get a well-earned rest.”

On Tuesday, around 40 people received a variety of meals from Cuba, including lasagne and garlic bread and vegetarian pasta recipes.

“Everyone has been so grateful and it’s been wonderful to see,” added Cuba, who admitted the lockdown had been ‘very difficult’ for him and many of his colleagues in the hospitality industry.

Those wanting to take up Cuba's kind offer can contact him on 07427 050552 to arrange their meal and collection from Nonna’s – or they can simply turn up at the Italian restaurant.

Cuba said: “All requests and any messages will be kept completely confidential and there are absolutely no strings attached.

“Everyone needs a little help now and again and there’s nothing to be embarrassed about.”

Cuba’s online fundraising page for ingredients can be accessed at www.gofundme.com/f/9z69c-free-food-for-those-who-need-it.

He said: “Any donations to this page will go directly to the cost of ingredients for these meals and any left over will be donated to a food bank based in Chesterfield, along with any remaining food.”

Cuba added: “I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported me with this, including Nuala Kendellen, Jake Ashmore and Cal Spolding.”
