How Clowne Facebook group is boosting community spirit during coronavirus lockdown

By delivering food to pensioners, offering support to people social isolating or simply sharing a photo or puzzle to cheer people up on Facebook, villagers have been doing their bit to raise spirits during the lockdown.

The Clowne Covid-19 Support Group on Facebook – which now has more than 1,000 members – has been detailing some of the amazing stories of how the community has come together amid the crisis.

Councillor Ross Walker said: “We have been up and running for just over three weeks. Looking back it seems unimaginable how this virus has changed our lives and the nation in just three short weeks.

“It may be scary stuff. The news reports look like scenes from a Hollywood movie and things may get worse. It has brought the worst out of people. But it has also brought the best out of people, offering support and help when needed.

“Clowne seems to be coming together to fight this virus. Let’s try and build on what you have achieved and TOUGHEN UP THE FIGHT. Together we can beat this.”

Many people have been posting when they go to the shops and asking anyone living nearby if they want items picking up.

Others have been sharing quizzes and puzzles, or urging people to send in photos of how they are spending their days during the lockdown.

Those businesses in the village still operating have been posting details of how to access their services.

And many say the community spirit on display has shown Clowne in its best possible light.

Mandy Richardson posted: “Can I just say that as a newcomer to Clowne (and a southerner to boot!) I’m very impressed with the community spirit I’ve seen on here and other community groups that I probably wouldn’t have joined without this awful virus.”

And Jayne Woolley said: “Thank you to our wonderful Clowne community spirit.”
