As first reported by the Derbyshire Times in July, the children’s play equipment at Badger Park needed to be removed after Chesterfield Borough Council carried out a comprehensive inspection and decided it was dangerous.

The work has now been completed but an empty space remains.

Councillor Maureen Davenport said: “It is hard to see the once busy play area now empty and bare, but the health and safety of children and families must be the priority.”

Councillor Katherine Hollingworth wants to ensure that the area continues to have a play area.

She said: “Outdoor play is fun but is also important for healthy child development.

"There are physical benefits, for example, by providing opportunities for children to develop flexibility and motor skills, but also emotional and social benefits by encouraging self-confidence and interaction with others.”

The two councillors have joined with local residents to develop a ‘Friends of

Ms Hollingworth added: “Perhaps you have fundraising skills or know of an organisation that would sponsor us?

"Perhaps you have ideas to share or would like to make a donation?

"We would love to hear from you - please get in touch.”

Chesterfield resident Martine has volunteered to be the secretary of the ‘Friends of Badger Park Play Area’.

She said: “We walk our dog on the Badger Bark every day with our children.

"The empty space where the playground used to be serves as a daily reminder that we have to come together as a community to build something better and more accessible.

"Our friends at the Monkey Park have given us hope that it can be done.”
