The civic society also argued that the ‘design, size and brightness of the sign make it unsuitable for the Edwardian shop on which it has been installed, which stands within the town centre conservation area’.

Victoria Naylor, owner of Bar35, is now seeking retrospective planning consent from Chesterfield Borough Council for the sign to stay – and said she had not been ‘underhand’ by putting it up.

She added “Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion – but at the end of the day the council will make the final decision on whether or not the sign is appropriate.”

Councillor Terry Gilby, the council’s cabinet member for economic growth, said: “We have received an application from the owners of Bar35 in relation to their signage.

“We are also considering the objections raised by the civic society, which will be taken into account during the decision making process.

“A decision will be made on the future of this sign soon, but we cannot comment on the progress of the application at this time.”
