North East Derbyshire District Council has given the green light to its own contractors to bulldoze the old council depot on Bridge Street, Clay Cross.

The depot will be familiar to many residents due to its proximity to the Tesco Extra store and other town centre businesses.

The site is made up of seven units in an L-shape, which are accessed via Bridge Street.

Council chiefs say the old depot is ‘beyond repair’ and the site has been earmarked for redevelopment.

Planning officer at North East Derbyshire District Council, Graeme Cooper, said: “The application site is located within the settlement development limits of Clay Cross.

"The site is also in an area identified as an employment area opposite the Clay Cross redevelopment site where Tesco and other retail units is located.”

Mr Cooper’s report adds: “The buildings on site form a now redundant council depot in the centre of Clay Cross.

"The former depot is a mix of traditionally constructed and steel portal frame buildings along with various small garages and outbuildings.

"The applicant advises that the site is beyond economical repair and earmarked for redevelopment. The buildings will be removed from site by mechanical means, with asbestos removed by hand.”

The council says measures will be taken to avoid disturbance to nearby residents.

Mr Cooper said: "Officers are satisfied that the method of demolition and site clearance are acceptable and that the amenity of neighbouring residents can be protected by suitable conditions restricting hours of operation and other legislation covering dust and noise nuisance.”

Work on the site is due to start on February 18, 2021, and be complete by the end of March.

Among the conditions attached to planning permission to demolish the buildings and clear the site, are that work only takes place between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, and between 9am and 1pm on Saturdays. No work can take place on Sundays or bank holidays.

Planning officers also urge that noise impact and dust management plans are put in place.
