Disappointment as newly opened community garden near Chesterfield vandalised

A newly-launched community garden near Chesterfield has been vandalised just week after opening.

Police received reports that vandals targeted Woodthorpe Community Liaison Garden in the North Derbyshire village of Woodthorpe between Friday, July 10 and Tuesday, July 12.

Plants were stolen and the garden’s pond was damaged.

This comes just a week after the garden was officially opened on Saturday, July 4.

A spokesperson for Staveley Police SNT said: “After attending the opening of the Woodthorpe Community Liaison Garden on 4th July 2026, it was really disappointing to learn that the garden had been vandalised over the weekend, with plants being stolen and the pond damaged.

"Volunteers have spent their own time creating the garden for local residents to enjoy.”
