Derbyshire council leader questions why Harry and Meghan are 'courting publicity' after Oprah Winfrey interview airs

In a two-hour show aired on CBS in America on Sunday night, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry spoke to Oprah Winfrey about a variety of topics, including mental health, racism and their relationship with the rest of the Royal Family.

Councillor Barry Lewis, Conservative leader of the council, said: “I can only say never have two people who apparently wanted so little publicity actively courted so much publicity.

“Of greater importance for me is that today is International Women’s Day and I wanted to thank the Queen for her long and amazing public service and devotion to duty to her nation and The Commonwealth.”

The interview will air in the UK on ITV at 9pm on Monday – and we asked readers if they will be watching.

On our Facebook page, Rachel Rodgers said: “And in the real world, his grandad is in hospital. I’m sure the Queen really needs this. I definitely won’t be watching. If you don’t want publicity then keep away from the media.”

Dave O’Reilly said he wouldn’t be tuning in and added: “People have more to worry about than these two.”

Sharon Mayren described the Duchess of Sussex as ‘completely classless’.

Cheryl Scott said she would be watching.

“I can’t wait to hear their own side of the story instead of listening to the rubbish made up by the media,” she added.

Ashley Taylor will also be a viewer.

He said: “I’ll be interested to see why Diana went through the same media attacks and bullying by the Royal Family and she’s known as the ‘people’s princess’ but why Meghan went through the same injustices and is hated for speaking out about it!”

Many people said they would be doing things like washing their hair and suchlike when the interview is on.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved to California after formally stepping down from royal duties in March last year.

It was announced last month that they would not be returning as working members of the Royal Family.
