Pubs and restaurants in Chesterfield and across Derbyshire are poised for bumper takings in the first week of reopening after the lengthy lockdown.

A post-pandemic surge of customers to bars and eateries is forecast following Government suggestions that the hospitality industry may gradually reopen from July 4.

Research shows that as much as £419m could be injected into the East Midlands economy by residents wishing to return to the pub, dine out or have a trip away with the family.

Kate Nicholls, chief executive from UK Hospitality, said: “It is encouraging to see that so many people are eager to support hospitality in their communities as soon as possible. It highlights what a fantastic social asset these businesses are and the great work our sector does.

“Consumer confidence is going to be key once businesses begin to reopen. It is going to be a long, hard road back to normality and venues are going to need the support of their communities.”

The survey of 2,000 people by Caterer.com found that during lockdown people missed socialising in restaurants and pubs (25%), going for a pint (10%) and barista-made coffee (7%).

Neil Pattison, director at Caterer.com, said: “While this has been an incredibly painful time for the sector, it’s encouraging to see the public have a huge appreciation for what the hospitality sector provides to communities. There is a strong appetite to support these businesses getting back on their feet.”
