The restaurant and drive-thru, situated off the West Bars roundabout, welcomed customers from noon.

The launch comes after significant investment from McDonald’s franchisee Walter Wright.

With the addition of this restaurant, Mr Wright will create more than 65 new full and part-time jobs for the local community.

He said: “We are delighted to be opening another brand new McDonald’s restaurant in Chesterfield and can’t wait to see local customers, both new and old, enjoy our services on offer.”

A number of residents have raised concerns about litter and traffic issues as a result of the new McDonald’s – but many others have said it is good to see new life being breathed into the site and jobs being created.

In a statement sent to Chesterfield Borough Council when McDonald’s submitted its planning application for the development, the company said: “McDonald’s is committed to tackling litter in as many different ways as possible.

“It is company policy to conduct a minimum of three daily litter patrols, whereby employees pick up not only McDonald’s packaging but also any other litter that may have been discarded in a 100m vicinity of a restaurant.”

A planning officer’s report which was considered by councillors last year also said ‘there is no data … that the development would result in severe harm on the highway network’.

There are currently two McDonald’s outlets in Chesterfield – on Low Pavement and at the Alma Leisure Park.

The site of the new development had lain derelict since 2015 when the old multi-storey car park was knocked down.
