The council say they have reviewed events they were planning to host, or that were booked to take place in council venues.

All events at the Winding Wheel and Pomegranate Theatre have been postponed or cancelled until at least the end of May.

Revolution House will also remain closed and all events similarly cancelled until the end of June.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “I hope everyone will understand why we have taken the decision to cancel these events.

“We realise lots of people were looking forward to some of the fantastic events and shows that our teams had organised. We will be regularly reviewing our events schedule during this crisis and will continue to provide updates when decisions are made.”

Any customers who have already purchased tickets for performances or events will be contacted and refunded where necessary.

There is one exception to these cancellations and that is for blood donation sessions at the Winding Wheel. If you are booked to give blood, please follow the advice from the NHS Blood team before attending.

The medieval fun day that was due to take place in Chesterfield town centre on 28 July has also been cancelled.

A spokesperson for the council said: “We recognise how disappointing this news will be, as the medieval fun day is one of Chesterfield’s largest summer town centre events.

“It is, however, important that the council acts responsibly and in the best interests of our traders, the public and the staff involved in organising this event.

“The fun day will return in 2021 when it can once again be hosted safely.”

Essential shops and food-based market stalls in the town centre, such as Ibbotsons fruit and vegetable stall and R.B. Elliott and Son Ltd the butchers, will be open but most will operate reduced opening hours over the Easter weekend.

In the Pavements Shopping Centre, the essential stores will be running reduced hours over the weekend.
