Chesterfield Royal Hospital appoints new chair
Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has welcomed Jackie Smith as its new chair.
Jackie was appointed following a competitive recruitment process led by the Trust’s Council of Governors, in line with its statutory responsibilities. She brings a strong track record of leadership, governance and partnership working across health and public service, with years of experience chairing NHS organisations across acute, mental health, community and specialist services.
Her appointment comes at an important time for the Trust, as it refreshes its five‑year strategy, Improving Care Together, and continues to focus on delivering high‑quality, compassionate care for its communities.
Most recently, Jackie served as Chair of Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, leading the organisation through post‑pandemic recovery, workforce pressures and greater system integration. Prior to this, she held a joint Chair role at Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust and Barnet, Enfield and Haringey NHS Trust, where her focus included strengthening governance, risk management and partnership working.

Earlier in her career, Jackie was Chief Executive of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, where she led major organisational transformation, oversaw significant regulatory reform including revalidation, and restored financial stability.
Jackie lives locally, giving her a strong personal connection to the Trust and the communities it serves. Outside of work, she is a keen runner and an active supporter of charities, reflecting her long‑standing commitment to public service and community contribution.
Jayne Stringfellow, who has been serving as Interim Chair, will complete her full nine‑year tenure with the Trust in September. She will continue in her roles as Non‑Executive Director and Chair of the Charitable Funds Committee until that time. Paul Wood will continue as Senior Independent Director and Deputy Trust Chair.
Carol Warren, Lead Governor, said: “My personal gratitude goes to Jayne for her outstanding commitment and contribution to the Trust over many years, and for the leadership she continues to provide. It is also a pleasure to welcome Jackie, who was appointed by the Governors as part of our statutory duty at the Trust. I am looking forward to continuing working with such caring and experienced professionals.”
Dr Hal Spencer, Chief Executive, added: “Firstly, my appreciation on behalf of #TeamCRH to Jayne – thank you, we so appreciate your dedication to the Trust over the years. Secondly, a warm welcome to Jackie, who has already shown a Chesterfield values‑led approach. I know she will work closely with colleagues, the Board and the Council of Governors as we navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead. I am very much looking forward to working with her as we continue to build on the strong foundations together.”
