Chesterfield pensioner drowned at Walton Dam

A pensioner whose body was found in the water at Walton Dam in Chesterfield took his own life, an inquest heard.

Anthony Tate, 75, was found dead at the dam on August 20, 2019 and his cause of death was drowning.

An inqest held on Tuesday, April 7 found that Mr Tate, of Ashgate Avenue, Chesterfield, had intended to take his own life.

Assistant coroner for Derbyshire Emma Serrano recorded a verdict of suicide at the hearing which was held behind closed doors because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The discovery of Mr Tate’s body in August last year prompted a police appeal because officers were initially unable to identify him.

A member of the public eventually called police with concerns for a neighbour who hadn’t been seen for a number of days.

Mr Tate was born in Chesterfield and was a retired office worker.
