Chesterfield gran and NHS worker to mark 84th birthday with spin-tacular charity challenge

A Chesterfield grandmother who has been working for the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic will get in a spin for her 84th birthday to raise money for charity.

Shirley Thomas, who works in the diabetic foot clinic at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, will take part in an 84-mile spin session in aid of Diabetes UK for her birthday on May 25.

Before lockdown began, Shirley went to the gym four days a week, working out with weights and taking spin classes.

She said: “There’s currently no known cure for any type of diabetes.

“I know this current pandemic has tragically led to all too many premature deaths – it’s heartbreaking.

“However, according to Diabetes UK, in 2018 diabetes was responsible for approximately 500 premature deaths per week.

“It’s the most devastating and fastest growing health crisis of our time, affecting more lives than any other serious health condition in the world.”
