Chesterfield Crematorium building closed 'until further notice' due to coronavirus

Council leaders say they took the ‘extremely difficult decision’ on Friday after an update in legislation from the Government.

The building remains open for services, but it is otherwise closed to the public.

This includes the book of remembrance room and the public toilets. The grounds of the crematorium will remain open, but this will be kept under review in-line with the latest guidance.

Councillor Jill Mannion-Brunt, Chesterfield Borough Council cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “We realise that for a lot of people the crematorium is an important place to remember loved ones, but at this difficult time Government legislation requires us to limit access to the crematorium building in order to protect members of the public and our staff.

“We know that some local residents like to use the crematorium grounds as a place to reflect, and they can continue to do this, but we politely request that all visitors follow the social distancing guidelines. We appreciate your understanding during these exceptional times.”

Funeral services are limited to immediate family members only, but crematorium staff can provide online streaming of services for wider friends and family if it is arranged through funeral directors.
